Cairo: At least 12 people were killed and two others injured today in a road accident near Sohag International Airport in Egypt’s Sohag governorate, officials said.
The accident took place near the entrance of the airport on the Cairo-Aswan desert road after two vehicles collided.
Two other people were severely injured during the incident, medical sources said.
Earlier this month, at least 22 people were killed in a road accident after a microbus exploded in Dakahlia governorate.
Egypt has one of the world’s highest accident rates owing to careless driving and poor road and vehicle conditions.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) ranks Egypt as the world’s 10th worst country in road accidents, after India, China and the US.
