Manama: A sudden storm in the Saudi city of Makkah on Thursday evening caused flash floods and wreaked havoc.

The neighbourhoods of Shawqiya, Om Al Jowd and Al Taniiem as well as elevated areas were hit by the storm that recalled a similar disaster that happened years ago.

Light to heavy rains have also fell over Taif, Madinah, Jeddah and others parts of western Saudi Arabia.

Dozens of vehicles were carried away by the floods while onlookers watched helplessly.

Civil Defense authorities said that they had received more than 630 calls for help in a matter of hours as people struggled to deal with the sudden onslaught, local news site Sabq reported.

No fatalities have been reported, the authorities said as sought to assure citizens and expatriates that patrols had been deployed to offer prompt assistance.
