Oman police end dramatic suicide attempt

The 22-year-old had recently lost his job and accumulated debts from phone purchases

Dubai: Omani police on Sunday successfully prevented a young man from jumping off a bridge over a highway in an bid to end his life.

Following 40 minutes of negotiations, the Royal Oman Police successfully prevented the 22-year-old Omani from jumping off Al Khoudh bridge over a busy highway north of the capital Muscat.

Local media said the man had recently lost his job at an electronics company and had accumulated debts from recent purchases. Some of the purchases included two mobile phones worth OMR800 (Dh7,632), and bounced cheques. He also had family problems. The Royal Oman Police was reported to have said that the man had left a suicide note.

The man was detained for a few hours but released later after he pledged in writing not to repeat the attempt, local news sites reported.
