Frankfurt: A German news agency says the octopus that gained world fame by correctly predicting World Cup results has died.

The German news agency dapd says the death of Paul the Octopus was announced by the aquarium in Oberhausen.

The aquarium could not be reached immediately.

Paul correctly predicted all games involving Germany, and also picked Spain to win the World Cup final over the Netherlands.

Emirati singer Abdullah Belkhair wants to buy Paul the psychic octopus who predicted with uncanny accuracy the 2010 World Cup match results in South Africa. According to Jordanian news portal Al Sawsana, Abdullah is prepared to give $40,000 (Dh146,890) for the resident of Sea Life aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen. Paul got all of his eight predictions right, seven of them pertaining to Germany's matches and one about the winner, Spain. Abdullah is considered one of the UAE's finest singers with a strongly traditional performing style.
