US troops hand over four development projects in Sulu
Jolo: American armed forces have handed over to local Philippines authorities in Sulu province four development projects that will benefit five villages.
During a dedication ceremony held recently in the village of Lahing-Lahing, Mayor Hadji Ahmad Omar signed a certificate of acceptance of the projects on behalf of the residents.
Thanking the villagers, Captain Joe Sokol of the US Army said: "We are grateful for your hospitality. Thank you for appreciating our efforts in assisting the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines] in its humanitarian undertakings. Nothing can be more heart-warming than knowing that our pooled efforts are gaining inspiring response from you." .
The new projects include two roads and two wells.
Niangkaan village chief Rauda Julkairnan said the road project had transformed the lives of people in her village.
"Before, the main road here was very difficult to negotiate. We could hardly transport our produce from here to Jolo town. During the rainy season, you would see people towing their vehicles. With the new road, we won't have too much to worry about even during heavy downpours. I have noticed that many of the villagers are now buying motor vehicles," she said.
Maj Gen Juancho Sabban, commander of the Philippine military's anti-terror Joint Task Force, Comet, said the dedication ceremony was the result of a collaborative effort of the military, local government departments, and residents in pursuit of common goals.
"These roads will help the cause of unity because they serve to connect people of different areas. Better roads not only spur economic development, but help stabilise and secure communities. An environment conducive to equitably shared economic growth is fundamental to reducing poverty and hence reduces crime," he said.
The US military has been engaged in infrastructure projects in Sulu for three years now in an apparent bid to capture the "hearts and minds of residents.
