Collection workers shake a leg to encourage citizens to pay up
Manila: Following its popular dancing inmates, Cebu City has added a similarly off beat yet innovative scheme to entice the public to pay their taxes, by coaxing through a dance.
City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva said employees at the city tax collection office have been sashaying to the beat of pop music such as Shakira's popular song Waka-Waka, as part of a programme to convince city residents to pay their taxes on time.
"All work and no play make jack a dull boy," Oliva said in a television interview aired by GMA News, adding that if the tax payers want, they can dance to the music as well.
On Monday, taxpayers in Cebu were greeted by an unexpected spectacle of tax office employees dancing to pop music during office hours. According to the employees this is the city's way of recognising and giving gratitude to the taxpayers.
Oliva said dancing gets the blood flowing and make the employees more energetic so they can deliver better services.
