Patna: A middle-aged woman was allegedly gangraped by some six persons in Bihar in a latest incident of sexual violence, highlighting the growing lawlessness in the state. The state has already reported 469 incidents of rape in the first four months of the current year, according to a report of Bihar police.

Police said the woman, accompanied by her husband, was going on foot when the youth seized her near a canal, which falls under Amnaur police station, in Saran district, took her to a dense bush and raped her by taking turns.

The accused also snatched the mobile phone of the victim, and recorded the incident before uploading it on social media. The incident took place earlier this week but came to light after the horrible video went viral.

In the video, the hapless woman is heard repeatedly requesting the rapists to spare her. They abandoned her after committing the crime.

The local district superintendent of police Santosh Kumar said he had ordered an investigation into the matter and action would be taken after the police probe.

The incident is a throwback to the 2018 incident when a woman and her teenage daughter were gang-raped by gun-toting robbers, while they were returning home on a bike being driven by her doctor-husband. The incident took place in southern Bihar’s Gaya district.

Last year, a total of 1,438 incidents of rape were reported in Bihar even though the movements of the masses remained restricted due to COVID-19-induced lockdown and other related restrictions enforced to check spread of coronavirus infections. In 2019, 1,450 incidents of rape were reported to the police, followed by 1,475 cases in 2018, 1,198 in 2017 and 1,008 in 2016.
