Raipur: A 47-year-old man from Chhattisgarh declared his mother dead in order to sell her property.

The 68-year-old widow, still alive, has registered a first information report (FIR) against her only son, Purshotam, alleging he struck a deal for her land after acquiring a fake death certificate from municipal authorities.

"Purshotam misinformed Rajnandgaon Municipal Corporation that his mother Firanteen Bai had died," said Shyamsundar Sharma, who is in charge of the police station.

Purshotam - of Tekardahi area in Rajnandgaon city, 110 kilometres west of Raipur - was about to sell his mother's one acre piece of land.

The police in charge said Firanteen Bai had been working as a maid since her drunkard son forced her to abandon home almost 18 months back.

"The poor woman appeared before the police on Saturday and registered an FIR against her son," said Sharma.

The police have been conducting raids to arrest Purshotam, who remains missing.
