Hyderabad: In the first-of-its-kind incident since the launch of its services, Hyderabad Metro trains came to a grinding halt due to a technical snag and its services remained suspended for more than two hours on the Miyapur-Ameerpet route.

Later, the service from Balangar to LB Nagar was resumed, but five stations towards Miyapur were closed in the busy morning hours, causing hardship to regular commuters.

The incident occurred when the power supply was disrupted due to a snag in the metro overhead line at Balanagar, bringing a train to a sudden halt. For regular travellers on the 10-month-old Hyderabad Metro, it was an unusual experience and the first time that a technical snag had brought the service to a halt.

NVS Reddy, managing director of Hyderabad Metro, said that the officials launched the repair work on a war footing and restored the power supply in the afternoon; services were restored on the entire corridor from Miyapur to LB Nagar.

However, during the disruption, the five closed stations between Balanagar and Miyapur were flooded with passengers and metro staff had a difficult time explaining to them why services were not running.

“During the disruption, services continued as usual on one line and people travelled normally from L B Nagar to Miyapur. The problem was only on one line, which was later resolved. This is nothing unusual and services are now fully restored,” he said.

An estimated 200,000 people commute by metro on two corridors every day.
