IndiGo bans passenger from flights after assault caught on video during mid-air incident
In a shocking mid-air incident that’s gone viral on social media, a passenger who suffered a panic attack onboard IndiGo flight 6E-138 from Mumbai to Kolkata was allegedly slapped by a fellow traveller—and later went missing.
According to media reports, he was found at Barpeta railway station in Assam, nearly 800 km from Kolkata and 400 km from his intended destination, Silchar.
Hussain Ahmed Majumdar, 32, a hotel employee from Mumbai and a native of Assam’s Cachar district, was flying to Silchar with a layover in Kolkata. During the flight, he experienced a panic attack and was being assisted by the cabin crew when a co-passenger, identified as Hafijul Rahman, suddenly slapped him.
A viral video shows Rahman assaulting Majumdar. When confronted by others onboard, Rahman claimed the man was "causing problems".
According to reports, Rahman was detained by police upon arrival in Kolkata but was later released. Majumdar also exited the airport, failing to take his connecting flight to Silchar the next day.
His family, unaware of the incident, had arrived at Silchar airport to receive him. After seeing the viral video and failing to contact him—his phone was switched off—they filed a missing person report.
Police later traced Majumdar to Barpeta railway station in Assam. Officials said he appeared physically and mentally unwell and is now being escorted home.
IndiGo has banned Hafijul Rahman from flying on any of its flights following the assault.
“The safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our foremost priority,” the airline said in a statement. “The individual has been suspended from flying on any IndiGo flights.”
According to sources cited by ANI, Hussain Ahmed Majumdar appeared unwell and was receiving assistance from cabin crew when Rahman suddenly slapped him without provocation.
In an official statement, the airline said: “We are aware of an incident involving a physical altercation on board one of our flights. Such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we strongly condemn any actions that compromise the safety and dignity of our passengers and crew.”
IndiGo also confirmed that the crew followed all Standard Operating Procedures and that all relevant regulatory bodies were informed.
