Incident happened when villager performed havan after returning from Kumbh Mela

Shahdol: In a rare and tragic incident, an elderly man lost his life, and several others were injured when a swarm of bees launched a sudden and violent attack in Gura village, located in the Vyohari police station area of Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening when a villager performed a havan after returning from the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The rising smoke from the ritual is believed to have disturbed a beehive in a nearby peepal tree, triggering the aggressive swarm.
What’s havan?
The victim, identified as 75-year-old Premlal Kol, was unable to escape in time and succumbed to multiple bee stings before he could receive medical attention.
According to the investigating officer from Vyohari police station, Premlal’s advanced age made it difficult for him to flee. His body has been sent for a post-mortem, and the official report is awaited.
“A post-mortem report will provide further clarity,” the officer told IANS over the phone.
Several other villagers were also stung in the attack, but they are reported to be out of danger. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as terrified villagers ran for safety, some jumping into water bodies while others sought shelter inside their homes.
During the panic, Premlal attempted to escape towards a field but tragically fell, leaving him vulnerable to the relentless swarm. His body was discovered four hours later, about 200 meters from the havan site.
Ten others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Authorities are investigating the incident, including what provoked the bees’ aggression, though preliminary reports suggest that the smoke from the havan may have triggered the attack.
