Nine new pedestrian crossings in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Nine new overhead pedestrian crossings are currently being constructed across the capital city at a cost of nearly Dh 35 million, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City announced in a statement sent on Saturday.

The location of the temporary overhead crossings was determined based on traffic flow and pedestrian needs, the statement added.

“This project [to set up overhead crossings] aims to provide safe crossing options for pedestrians, specifically in areas experiencing frequent accidents as a result of pedestrians crossing the road in the wrong spots,” said Abdullah Saeed Al Shamsi, acting executive director of municipal infrastructure and assets sector at the municipality.

Al Muroor Road will have one crossing constructed near the bus station, while two others are being set up on Airport Road, near the Mushrif Mall and Carrefour respectively. Mussaffah Street will also have two crossings erected, one near the workers’ accommodation areas and another opposite Dalma Mall.

Two crossings are also located over the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway in Bahia and Al Shahama areas, while two other crossings are being erected over the Abu Dhabi- Al Ain highway, near the Abu Dhabi University and in Bani Yas Area respectively.

Al Shamsi called upon residents to use the overhead crossings for their own safety once construction works on them are completed.
