A deadline of one month has been given to motorists of 81,982 vehicles with expired registrations before Dubai Traffic Police starts a major campaign to punish the violators, a senior official said.

A deadline of one month has been given to motorists of 81,982 vehicles with expired registrations before Dubai Traffic Police starts a major campaign to punish the violators, a senior official said.

Tasjeel" - where the car registration process takes place. Anyone found with an expired registration faces being fined and having their vehicle confiscated.

"Of these 81,982 vehicles, 19,000 vehicles have not been registered for four years; 11,000 vehicles completed three years with expired registration; and 40,000 vehicles completed more than two years with expired registration."

Brigadier Al Zafein added that if these motorists do not meet the deadline of one month and renew their registration, they would be punished in many ways.

"We are going to start a major traffic campaign where we will check maximum number of vehicles to see the status of their registration.

"The vehicles of all those who are found to have expired registration will be confiscated till they renew the registration. They will be fined as well."

He added: "Some motorists say they have an excuse for not renewing their registration because their vehicles are at the garage for more than six months for repairs. They should know that such excuses are not accepted.

"This will organise the process and protect them from the punishment. They should take this issue very seriously and decide whether to cancel or renew their vehicle's registration," he said.

He added that some of these vehicles with expired registration have insurance.

"Some motorists pay insurance for two or four years, and this is how they get the insurance coverage even if they don't have registration."

He added that those who do not have insurance coverage and their registration has expired, when they are involved in car accidents will have to pay for the vehicle repair.

"If they fail to do so, then they will be involved in a legal case," Al Zafein said.
