Six new artificial lakes are being constructed at a cost of Dh44 million to collect rain water, as part of a project by Dubai Municipality's Waste Water Department.

The idea is part of a project initiated in 1998 to beautify the city on the one hand, and to reduce the cost of pumping rain water into the sea on the other. It will also help in landscaping areas surrounding the lakes to attract more tourists.

Three artificial lakes will be set up in Nad Al Sheeba, and another three linked with the main pumping station at Tawar Area.

The project could also be used in future for the purpose of reclaiming land near these lakes, and will be extended further to include other low lying areas in Dubai that retain rain water.

The first lake of this kind was set up in Quoz area in July, 1999.
