Entries are now open to all for the fifth Sharjah Prize for Library Literature. It focuses on topics related to library services applicable to the UAE society.
Organised by the Directorate of Libraries at the Department of Culture and Information, the prize aims to develop library services in order to employ the latest methods of displaying, indexing and accessing information.
The topics are: The electronic library and its services, the development of information services in the present electronic environment, new difficulties and tasks for the reference librarian, indexing and abstracting in Arab world libraries, users' attitude towards the electronic information resources, especially with regard to internet usage.
Cash awards will be presented to the winners. The first prize is Dh5,000, the second Dh3,000 and the third Dh2,000.
The essays should reflect the current situation of library services in the library under study.
The papers can be submitted in Arabic or in English.
Entries should be new and not used in any competition before. Those submitted earlier for any university degree will not be accepted. Proper research methods must be reflected in the paper including citation.
Candidates must comply with copyright and intellectual property laws in citing others. The winning papers will be published in 'IQRA', the annual magazine published by the Sharjah Library. All papers must be submitted before January 31, 2003.
Meanwhile, the winners of the fourth prize were given awards yesterday in a function held at the Sharjah Public Library.
