The Dubai Police Traffic Department (DPTD) is to adopt an installment plan to help traffic offenders pay their fines.

Following a meeting held at the DPTD under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Colonel Hani Al Sawalhi, Director of Licensing Department, the new measures were taken to help people who have accumulated a heap of traffic fines.

The meeting, which was attended by Major Mohammed Nasser Al Sayyed Abdulrazzak, Director of Administrative Affairs Department, and Major Khalifah Mubarak bin Darray, Head of the Fines Section, has formed a committee to control the payment process.

The fines will be paid in two phases: first payment should cover part of the money and the rest should be paid by several cheques.

In the event of dud cheques, the case will be taken to court. This is why cheques should be written by owners of the vehicles.

The minimum sum for the first payment is Dh1,000. The rest will be collected through the Dubai courts.

The new decision does not include attendance violations that result in a monthly fine of Dh10. The meeting recommended that offenders pay half the value of the fines in the first payment and that this rule be applied to both UAE nationals and expatriates.
