Myths can be just old beliefs or have some basis, such as the battle between a Caesarean operation and a natural delivery.

"While a natural delivery has the advantage of avoiding a scar in the uterus and abdomen, a C-section could have complications during the surgery itself or caused by anaesthesia," Dr Shibu Saif Al Deen, Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Masfoot Medical Centre, Ajman said.

She added that blood loss is more in case of a C-section and would require the patient to stay in the hospital for a longer duration of time. "Repeat sections may be needed for successive pregnancies. However, if there is a maternal or foetal indication it may be life saving for both mother and fetus to opt for a C-section," she said.

1) Exercise is dangerous for pregnant women - false. Walking and routine exercises which do not cause physical stress to the pregnant woman cause no harm. One needs to be careful in case of special conditions such as maternal hypertension, cardiac diseases, vaginal bleeding or a threat of premature labour. Moderate exercise is beneficial as it lessens discomfort and facilitates early recovery after delivery. Consult with your doctor about the kind of exercise that is ideal for your body weight and medical history.

2) There is nothing that can be done about morning sickness - false. Oral tablets, injections and rectal suppositories, which do not cause harm to the baby can be used in case of excessive vomiting.

3) Sleeping on the left side is better - true. When a woman lies on her back, the pregnant uterus compresses the blood return to the heart and puts pressure on the spine. While sleeping on the left side increases the blood flow to the placenta, thereby improving circulation.
