If the place to start creating environmental awareness is the school, then the English Speaking School and the Indian Scholars School in Ras Al Khaimah are taking the right steps in that direction. Friday checks out the positive impact of such an initiative

If environment is 'the conditions within which the human soul can flourish', as ex-U.S. president Jimmy Carter, recipient of the Sheikh Zayed Award defined it, the children from Ras Al Khaimah Schools are doing a wonderful job of not just conserving but spreading awareness too. And, along the way, they've learnt some invaluable lessons for life.

It all started when the Public Works and Services Department of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality started an integrated waste-management programme and an environmental-awareness campaign in tandem. Since prevention is better than cure, they targeted schools. Because here, after all, are the citizens of tomorrow who hold the fate of the Universe in their hands.
