Conference to focus on sustainable cities and sustainable development
Abu Dhabi: With the motto “Sustainable Cities, Sustainable Development”, Fulbright Academy of Science and Technology held its 7th annual conference at the Higher Colleges of Technology Women’s College (HCT) on Sunday.
Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and HCT Chancellor, inaugurated the annual conference and delivered the opening address on the Fulbright Academy critical and global concerns such as health, education, environment, and economic development.
The conference sought to take the Fulbright Academy plan forward, and discussed the concept of sustainability as a way to make cities and communities more liveable by balancing economic, social and environmental needs.
“We know that sustaining our planet demands global cooperation. It is not enough for the UAE alone to be committed to setting world standards for protection and sustainability of environmental resources that improve the quality of human life,” Shaikh Nahyan said.
“It is not enough for the UAE alone to be convinced that environmental and cultural resources must be protected if we are to experience sound economic growth and deal successfully with critical societal issues,” Shaikh Nahyan added.
The conference, which will bring together around 34 local and international sustainability leaders from government, business, academia and the community, will engage in important conversations about environmental, economic and social development and to find creative solutions to the pressing global issue of sustainability.
Conference delegates will additionally investigate how science and technology influence construction, transportation, health and living spaces and how advances in social sciences are having a huge impact on social development, city management, planning and social and economic development.
The HCT Chancellor said: “Our actions and beliefs must engage with those of other nations around the globe. We are all in one single world, a world that we must all sustain together.”
“If we can abstain from waste and destruction and sustain what gives us life and happiness, we can create a future that will make us proud,” Shaikh Nahyan said.
