Academic UmmeSalma Mujtaba writes on programmes, institutions and what to look out for
The regulatory body Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan governs higher education in Pakistan.
Overseas applicants must have a higher secondary school certificate from the Federal Board Pakistan (intermediate grade 12) or an equivalent examination.
The latter must submit an Equivalence Certificate issued by the Inter Board Chairman Committee, Islamabad (IBCC) that indicates the marks equivalent to those of the intermediate exam.
Physics, chemistry and mathematics are mandatory subjects at the higher secondary level for admission to any engineering programme.
Physics, chemistry and biology are mandatory at the higher secondary level for admission to any medical programme.
Applicants must appear for entrance tests for most of programmes. For detailed schedules check the relevant websites.
For any engineering degree, students and parents must make sure that the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) accredits the university.
PEC is the body that recognises qualifications granted by universities, colleges and institutions offering engineering in Pakistan.
All students, and especially the parents, must ask to see the accreditation status of an engineering programme at the various universities/institutions and campuses or affiliated colleges of the chartered universities before seeking admission.
After graduation the PEC only registers students graduating from institutions that offer accredited engineering programmes.
For a medical degree, check for accreditation from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC).
The General Medical Council UK automatically recognises all the colleges recognised by the PM&DC and the graduates of these colleges are eligible to sit for the P.L.A.B or Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board Test for higher education in the UK.
