Dubai: As UAE’s students gear up for a new school year, Dubai’s Knowledge Dubai's Human Development Authority (KHDA) has released a helpful video offering parents expert advice on making the return to school smooth, stress-free, and even exciting.

Dr. Fatima Youssef, Consultant in Pediatric Mental Health with Dubai Health, stressed the importance of parental support during this transitional period. “The transition back to school can be exciting, but it can also bring anxiety and uncertainty for many children,” she said.

The video outlines practical steps parents can take to ease the return to school:

  • Listen to children: Understanding children’s feelings and concerns lays the foundation for emotional support. Asking them about what excites or worries them helps them feel heard.

  • Encourage open communication: Creating a safe space where children can freely share experiences and emotions builds trust and strengthens parent-child relationships.

  • Support routines gradually: Adjusting bedtimes, morning routines, and study habits a few days before school starts helps children adapt without stress.

  • Foster confidence: Celebrating small achievements, emphasizing effort over perfection, and helping children set realistic academic and personal goals encourage self-belief.

  • Promote emotional well-being: Teaching coping strategies for stress, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or talking about feelings with a trusted adult, equips children to manage anxiety effectively.

Dr. Youssef also highlighted the importance of balancing study and play. “School is not just about academics. It’s about friendships, creativity, and growth,” she said. “Parents should encourage children to explore hobbies, sports, and social activities alongside their studies to ensure a well-rounded development.”

Parental involvement

KHDA’s video emphasises that parental involvement is key to children’s overall happiness and academic success. By offering support, understanding, and encouragement, parents can help their children navigate challenges and make the new school year a positive, fulfilling experience.

With schools reopening, KHDA and Dubai Health encourage parents to be proactive in their children’s mental health and to make the school journey a time for growth, joy, and lasting memories.
