AUD to mark the Indian festival of lights

Dance performances, instrumental recitals and songs by students will be part of Diwali Night 2003, organised by the American University in Dubai (AUD) on Saturday to mark Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. The event will be held at the AUD auditorium from 7pm onwards.

"The aim of the show is to celebrate Diwali as well as introduce Indian culture to people of different nationalities," said Jyotika Lakhani, president of the Indian Cultural Club at AUD.

Dubai-based music institute, Melody Makers, will also participate in the show. The highlight of the evening will, however, be a fashion show featuring clothes for women and men designed by Deeksha Bhatia, a graduate from India's National Institute of Fashion Technology.

Bhatia recently launched her design label, "Dfuze:" at Fashionova 2003 and the Miss India-UAE beauty pageant. But the AUD event will be her first solo fashion show, where she will display her line of fusion wear.

"Inspired by the occasion of Diwali, the collection displays bright and vibrant colours with an Indo-Western look," said Deeksha.

Diwali Night 2003 will be compered by members of The Troupe, a newly-formed drama club at AUD. "Rather than host the event in the usual style, we've intertwined the medium of drama to present the show with a flavour of Diwali fun," said Gautam Goenka, president of The Troupe.

The show is open to all. For more information contact the student services centre on the AUD campus.
