Ras Al Khaimah: The RAK Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced a construction worker to five years in prison and deportation for breaking into a house and attacking an elderly woman living in the household, according to a report published by the Arabic daily Al Ittihad.

The worker beat the woman once she discovered his entry, and then stole the woman's mobile phone when he was escaping. Ras Al Khaimah Police were able to arrest the man when he tried to sell the phone.

At first, the worker denied the accusation, and said that the phone belonged to his friend. After more questioning, the worker confessed his crime. The prosecution's investigations showed that the worker observed the house for days, and once he was certain that there was nobody home, he jumped the fence in order to carry out the robbery.

The worker said that he was shocked to find the elderly woman, who screamed for help once she saw him. He added that it was never his intent to beat her, but was forced to once she tried to thwart his robbery. The worker stole the mobile phone just as he was escaping.

The man was then referred to the criminal court, where he confessed to his crimes.
