Dubai: Police have arrested the man who murdered his wife with the help of his friend before he fled the country, according to a senior police official.

Maj Gen Ebrahim Khalil Al Mansouri, Director of the Criminal and Investigation Department of Dubai Police, told Gulf News on Saturday that the man was convinced by Dubai Police, acting through a mediator, to return and do what was best for him.

The suspect returned to the UAE and surrendered as he said he believed in the UAE’s judicial system. Major General Al Mansouri said Dubai Police had issued an arrest warrant through Interpol against the Indian suspect, identified as Atif Popere, 24.

Maj Gen Al Mansouri said that Popere was suspected to have strangled his wife with the help of his friend after fighting with her.

He added the wife, Mumbai-based Bushra, 23, was murdered by her husband with the help of a Pakistani man identified as Ali.

Maj Gen Al Mansouri said the CID arrested Ali immediately after the crime and Ali told police that Popere murdered his wife. The couple lived in Bur Dubai and the husband used to bring his friend home every night and they used to consume alcohol together. The husband’s behaviour used to upset the woman, according to information provided to police.

Bushra’s body was found on the Dubai-Al Ain border. Post-mortem reports revealed that she had been strangled.
