Dubai inmates on trial for possessing drugs

Dubai: Two inmates of Dubai Central Jail are standing trial for possessing narcotics.

The Public Prosecution had charged the Emirati duo, 40-year-old A.M. and 32-year-old Y.E., with possession of 1.77 grammes of heroin.

The Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday adjourned the case because the suspects did not appear in court.

According to records, a police corporal testified that he accompanied A.M. to Rashid Hospital's Trauma Centre for treatment of his wound.

He said after treatment, A.M. asked the corporal to take him to one of the toilets at the Trauma Centre. After A.M. finished using the toilet, he was taken back to the central jail.

The corporal testified that before A.M. entered the cell, he was checked, but nothing was found with him.

"I asked him to open his mouth, but he refused at the beginning saying that what is in his mouth is a medicine," the corporal said in his statement to the Public Prosecution.

After insisting, A.M. opened his mouth and there was a red balloon inside it.

Anti-narcotics team who were at the jail, were called to check the findings. A policeman opened the balloon and found 99 white tablets inside it, 20 blue tables and five envelops with a beige colour powder and a small bag with white substance.

A.M. told police that another inmate Y.E. had asked him to bring the narcotics from trauma centre toilet.
