Dubai: Dubai traffic court has convicted a Gulf national of deliberately endangering the lives of others after he drove aggressively on Sheikh Zayed Road, repeatedly harassing another driver before fleeing the scene. The court imposed a fine of Dh5,000 and ordered the suspension of his driving license for three months.

According to court documents, prosecutors charged the man with endangering public safety after he tailgated another vehicle at high speed, failed to maintain a safe distance, and used high beams to intimidate the driver ahead of him.

He then veered onto the emergency shoulder to overtake before swerving back in front of the other car and repeatedly slamming his brakes, creating the risk of a serious collision.

The complainant told investigators he was traveling at 135 kilometers per hour toward Abu Dhabi when the defendant’s vehicle appeared suddenly behind him. The aggressive use of headlights left him momentarily unable to see clearly.

He said the reckless maneuvers forced him to slow down sharply to 80 kilometers per hour to avoid a crash. The defendant then sped away.

Police later identified and arrested the driver after the victim reported the incident and provided the vehicle’s details. Though the defendant denied the charges, the court ruled the evidence was compelling and upheld the case against him.

Dubai Police emphasized that immediate measures are taken in cases of reckless driving, including impounding vehicles involved in stunts or endangering others. Under Decree No. 30 of 2023, drivers face a fine of Dh50,000 to release an impounded car.

Dubai Police urged the public to cooperate by reporting dangerous road behavior through the “Police Eye” feature on the Dubai Police app or via the “We Are All Police” hotline at 901, stressing that community vigilance is key to ensuring safety on the emirate’s roads.
