Every week, we bring you the latest on the UAE's clubs, associations and groups. We choose one each time and profile it, highlighting its purpose and activities.

This week: Sharjah English School Badminton Club

Sharjah English School (SES) Badminton Club is celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year. Established in 1978 by an Englishman, Derek John, the club has at present 30 members. "SES Badminton Club, one of the oldest in the UAE, is also one of the top-rated clubs in the country. All members are dedicated players with above average levels of skill in the game, some of them even seeded in UAE," said J.P. Prem Lal, chairman of the club.

Membership is open to all adults irrespective of their nationality. "We have a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. Any person wishing to join has to visit the club and play as a guest for a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 times, during which period, his or her game is assessed. Only those with certain level of skill are then allowed to become members," explained Prem Lal.

There is a nominal registration fee and players pay additional charges per day. The club functions on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7.30pm to 10.30pm every week. Members must attend at least 30 per cent of these games. A general body meeting is held and elections are conducted to elect office bearers each year.

SES Badminton Club co-ordinates with other badminton clubs in the country throughout the year and friendly matches between members and their counterparts from other badminton clubs in Ras Al Khaimah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are regular events. The club was runner-up at the UAE Millennium Club League Tournaments for 2002.

Prem Lal believes that badminton is a game that particularly promotes sportsmanship, due to its strict etiquettes. "The games are almost always cherished encounters, players being warm and friendly before and after the game, as well as in the court," says Prem Lal. "But don't be astonished to see the same players display highly competitive spirit and the speed and agility of a tiger stalking his prey during the game."

SES Badminton Club conducts tournaments annually whereby players are seeded, based on their performance. "This motivates members to improve their game," feels Prem Lal. "Badminton is a highly aerobic game that requires quick movements, timing and reflex actions. We promote the game mainly as a fitness regime for our members. A number of guest players are invited throughout the year and we also undertake other recreational activities and outings where families of members can join in the fun."

The club uses the facilities of Sharjah English School. "We are highly indebted to George B. Savage, headmaster of SES and a great badminton enthusiast, for his support and guidance. The commitment shown by the school to this excellent sport is certainly laudable," says Prem Lal.

For the jubilee celebrations, SES has planned a get-together later this month.
