Nearly 150 UAE students took English language courses in the UK last year through the British Council. This figure was provided yesterday by Mike Coney, regional education manager for the British Council, to announce its UAE English Week programme from April 29 to May 2.

These students also increased their average duration of study of the English language in the UK from four weeks to six, he said. They were also looking for more year-long academic courses as a means of completing their bachelor's degrees.

Speaking about English week, their second in the UAE, Coney said that "Learn English" will be the simple message. This programme will focus on the opportunities and benefits of learning English at all ages and levels through study courses in the UAE and the UK.

An added attraction is the chance for two people to win English language courses in the UK and for one teacher to win a training course in English as a foreign language. The prizes include tuition fees, flights and accommodation.

During the four-day English week, visitors may test their language skills, sample an English class, test the latest language learning technology and find out more about English courses in the UAE and the UK.

It will be held each day in a different emirate, starting with Abu Dhabi on April 29, Sharjah on April 30, Ras Al Khaimah on May 1 and Dubai on May 2. The time will be from 4 to 9pm.
