The former lead singer of Pakistani rock group Jal has ascended sharply in his career since leaving the band. A solo music career has made him one of the most recognisable faces in the country and beyond — having filled the soundtracks of both Bollywood and Hollywood films. He has also performed alongside members of Guns N' Roses and mainstream acts such as Jay Sean. Aslam is taking part in a renaissance of sorts in local cinema — having played a leading role in the film Bol. A new generation of Pakistanis have a great affinity for the arts — something that is helping fight the oppressive dogmas that abound.
