As the scorching UAE summer sets in, the quest for cooler climates becomes a top priority for residents and visitors. While air-conditioned interiors offer temporary relief, the country's diverse landscapes also present natural havens where temperatures drop significantly, offering a refreshing alternative. From soaring mountain peaks to serene wadis, here are 3 prime getaway destinations in the UAE to escape the summer blaze.
One of the coolest places in the UAE during summer is Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the Hajar Mountains, located in Ras Al Khaimah. Standing at over 1,900 meters above sea level, Jebel Jais consistently has temperatures that are a good 10 to 15 degree Celsius cooler than the coastal regions. While July daytime temperatures can still reach around 32 to 33 degree Celsius, the air is drier and the evenings bring a welcome crispness, often dropping to 24 degree Celsius.
The significant drop in temperatures because of the altitude – which provides the most substantial temperature relief in the UAE.
It is also home to the world’s longest zip line, Jais Flight, as well as Jais Sledder, Sky Tour and various other hiking and biking trails. While the temperatures are significantly lower than the rest of the UAE, it is always advised to stay hydrated and visit the location before 11am and after 4pm, as the temperatures are lower at that time.
Nestled in the Hajar Mountains on the outskirts of Dubai, Hatta offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor adventure. Its elevated position contributes to a more moderate climate compared to central Dubai. While it’s still warm in July with averages ranging from 31 to 42 degree Celsius, the lower humidity and mountain breezes offer a noticeable difference, especially in the mornings and evenings.
As the temperatures and level of humidity is much lower when compared to central Dubai, you can enjoy kayaking and hiking with your friends and family.
Hatta which is famed for kayaking and paddle boarding on the Hatta Dam, extensive mountain biking trails (with varying difficulty levels), and numerous hiking paths – makes it the best getaway from the scorching heat in other parts of UAE.
It also has the Hatta Heritage Village, which offers a glimpse into the traditional Emirati life with its exhibit and restored ancient structures.
With several other activities like archery, high-ropes course and more, Hatta is one of the best getaway places in the UAE, this summer.
One of the highest mountains in Abu Dhabi and the second highest in the UAE, Jebel Hafeet is the place to visit to beat the heat.
Its elevation of approximately 1,240 meters (4,070 feet) ensures cooler temperatures than the surrounding desert. With average temperature highs around 36.4 to 43.3 degree Celsius, and lows of 28.8 degree Celsius, this place is a must visit, especially to view the spectacular sunrise and sunset.
The winding road to the summit is considered one of the world's best driving roads, and like mentioned earlier, the viewing points at the top provide a stunning view of Al Ain and the vast desert beyond.
And at the base of the mountain lies Green Mubazzarah, a lush oasis with natural hot springs and green parks, perfect for relaxation and picnics. And if you’re a history buff, you can also explore the ancient Jebel Hafeet Beehive Tombs that are located at the foot of the mountain and is said to date back 5,000 years.
But keep in mind that when planning your summer escape in the UAE, "cooler" is relative. While these destinations offer significant relief from the extreme heat, it's still advisable to plan outdoor activities for the early mornings or late afternoons/evenings, stay hydrated, and dress appropriately.
