Smooth, detailed and full of classic Halo action
Dubai: The launch of Halo 5: Guardians gave journalists their first chance to try the game.
With limited time available, I only had time to play the first opening sequences of the solo campaign, with no opportunity to test the new multiplayer modes.
What I experienced was impressive. Graphics are detailed, screens are busy and, most importantly, the game runs very smoothly and provides a classic Halo shooter experience.
There are a number of innovations. For the first time a player has limited control over squadmates, being able to direct them to particular points of the battlefield an addition to calling them for medical assistance when needed.
Maps in the early phases are busy, packed with cover and hostiles, and with multiple routes to achieve objectives.
The game appears to be doing its best to reflect a chaotic battlefield. Not only do enemies take advantage of cover and different elevations, there are a host of visual and audible distractions — blaster bolts and dogfights taking place in the background, and calls and shouts from other characters.
It makes for challenging gameplay and a lavish, even beautiful, environment in which to play.
The time on the game was not sufficient to provide a thorough review, but Halo 5 makes a very good first impression.
