Dubai: Former Barcelona winger Carles Perez has been hospitalised after a freak dog attack in Greece, ruling him out of Aris Thessaloniki’s upcoming Europa Conference League clash.

According to local media, the 27-year-old Spaniard was bitten in the groin area while attempting to break up a fight between his dog and another. The incident occurred in Thessaloniki, where Perez is currently on loan from Celta Vigo. He reportedly sustained a deep wound to his genitals and required hospital treatment.

Critical condition dismissed

Spanish outlet AS reported that Perez suffered “severe cuts” but is now recovering at home after doctors ruled out surgery. Initial speculation about a critical condition has been dismissed.

Perez featured in Aris’ 2-1 defeat to Araz-Nakhchivan in the first leg of the Europa Conference League second qualifying round but will now miss the return leg.

A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Perez made 13 first-team appearances between 2012 and 2020, scoring twice — including a memorable goal against Inter Milan in the Champions League. He later played for Roma and Celta Vigo before joining Aris on loan just three weeks ago.
