Dubai: Kenya’s David Barmasai stopped strong contenders to win the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon on Friday.

The 23-year-old runner set a personal best time of 2hours 07minutes and 18seconds for the 42km race, as he finished ahead of compatriot Evans Cheruiyot, the winner of the 2008 Chicago Marathon.

Cheruiyot finished second in 2:08:17sec.

Eshetu Wendimu, who was the pace maker to the legendary  Haile Gebrselassie, finished third in 2:08.54sec.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Aselefech Mergia won in the women’s run in 2:22:45s, reaching the finish line  three seconds shy of the course record and ahead of Lydia Cheromei (2:23:01s), of Kenya, and Sweden’s Isabellah Andersson (2:23:41s)
