Goodwood joy for Hamdan

Dubai: Dubai-owned Sea Lord won the Totesport Mile heritage handicap with a brilliant front-running display at Glorious Goodwood yesterday.

The three-year-old, who is owned by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, broke well under regular UAE jockey Royston Ffrench and made all to win from Godolphin's Invisible Man.

Despite coming under pressure from the Frankie Dettori-ridden challenger, who looked a big threat a furlong from home, Sea Lord did not lose any momentum as he stayed on for a comfortable length and a half victory.

Ffrench, who finished runner-up to Tadhg O'Shea in the 2009-2010 UAE Jockeys' Championship, was all praise for trainer Mark Johnston and his team at Kingsley House Stables in Middleham.

"He is a typical Johnston horse who has done nothing but improve," Ffrench told Channel 4 Racing. "When something comes to him he goes again, he doesn't know when to give up. They do wonders the whole yard to keep them in form and have them running at the big meetings... it's a great team effort."

Johnston, accompanied by his wife and assistant trainer Deirdre added: "Really this horse should be out of handicaps and we did look at the Listed race, for which he's declared, Friday.

Big ask

"But the lure of the prize-money persuaded us to go for this. It's a big ask for him to run again tomorrow, but if he comes out of his particularly well, it's still a possibility. We've got a bit of thinking to do."

Earlier Michael Hills partnered Redwood to win the Glorious Stakes (Gr 2) from the Michael Jarvis-trained Sri Putra while Libranno took the Richmond Stakes (Gr 2) to give jockey Richard Hughes his sixth success of the meeting.

Godolphin's Cavalryman and La de Two were non-runners in the Glorious Stakes leaving Dettori ride Whispering Gallery, who finished in seventh place.
