Redwood looks the one to beat in Group 2 contest on opening day
Dubai: The £80,000 (Dh469,976) Princess of Wales' Stakes (Group 2) is the highlight of the opening day at Newmarket's July meeting.
A field of 10 horses, including five with UAE connections, will face the starter over a mile and a half.
Dordogne, a winner at this course in the spring and successful in the Lingfield Derby Trial on his latest start, represents Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, while Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance sees his hopes carried by Laaheb. Laaheb was fourth in the $5 million Sheema Classic at Meydan racecourse in March. Afsare, who looks to have the best chance of the quintent, carries the colours of Shaikh Mohammad Obaid Al Maktoum, while Campanologist will sport the all blue silks of Godolphin.
Buthelezi, owned by Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, completes the Dubai raiding party. However, the horse that they will have to contend with is 11/4 favourite Redwood, who was runner-up in the race last year.
