Dubai: The Switzerland women’s football team’s preparations for the Euro 2025 tournament suffered a significant setback after a heavy 1–7 defeat to Luzern’s U-15 boys’ team in a friendly match.
Switzerland is set to kick off its Euro 2025 campaign next Wednesday against Norway in Basel. However, the lead-up to the tournament has raised concerns following the lopsided loss.
19-year-old Swiss forward Leila Wandeler speaking to Aargauer Zeitung newspaper, said: "The result didn't matter. For us, it was about testing our game principles. The training sessions are exhausting. But we all want to be in our best shape for this European Championship. That's why I think it's a good thing."
Sven Micosse, head of communications for the Swiss women’s team, addressed the result: “It’s not uncommon in women’s football to play against youth boys’ teams. The aim is to introduce a competitive edge. At this stage of preparation, the focus is mainly physical. These matches replicate the intensity and distance covered in our international fixtures.”
This is not the first instance of a top women’s team facing a youth boys’ side. In 2017, the U.S. Women’s National Team — then ranked number one in the world — lost 2–5 in a scrimmage against a U-15 boys’ team from Dallas, Texas.
