Liverpool's hopes of mounting a serious Premier League title challenge next season could face a major hurdle, with Mohamed Salah potentially missing up to 10 games due to international duty.

The Egyptian forward, who recently committed to Liverpool until 2027 with a reported lucrative £25 million-per-year deal, is likely to be unavailable during a crucial part of the 2025/26 season because of the rescheduled Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The tournament, taking place from December 21 to January 18, coincides with the Premier League's packed festive schedule, the FA Cup third round, and potential Champions League fixtures.

Salah’s importance to Liverpool cannot be overstated. This season, the 32-year-old has once again been their star man, leading the line with 27 goals and 18 assists in just 32 games.

His absence will leave a void that Liverpool will find difficult to fill, particularly during the Christmas spell and its congested fixture list.

While Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott, and rising star Ben Doak offer depth on the right flank, none can replicate Salah’s consistency and attacking threat.

Could Isak be wearing a Liverpool shirt next season?

Liverpool may be prompted to explore the transfer market for additional attacking options, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak reportedly emerging as their top target this summer. However, prying the star striker away from the Magpies will be no easy task, and the Reds would likely need to pay a premium to secure his services.

Salah’s AFCON commitments include group-stage matches against Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Angola, with the first game scheduled for December 22. He is expected to join his international teammates at least a week before the opening fixture.

If Egypt advance to the final, Salah’s absence could stretch beyond January 18, leaving Liverpool without their talisman for a critical period of the season.
