Al Jazira striker Dekay is challenged by Hassan Ali (foreground) and Ali Hassan of Al Ahli during their UAE First Division League match at the Al Ahli Club stadium.

It was the second successive defeat for Al Jazira after they were trounced 5-1 by their traditional rivals Al Wahda last week in the Abu Dhabi Derby.

The second defeat reduced their hopes of capitalising on the surprising defeat of Al Wahda, the leaders, on Thursday, to jump to the top spot on the standings. They remained with 10 points from 6 matches.

Al Ahli have compensated for their 3-0 loss against their old foes Al Nasr last week in the Dubai Derby.

Faisal Khalil was the hero scoring twice and leading Al Ahli to collect 10 points from 5 matches. They have a postponed match against Al Ain.

Faisal's second goal was a clinical finish and ended the hopes of the visitors of winning the match.

It came in a fast counter-attack while Jazira was taking complete command of the match and pressing against Ahli's goal.

Timed to perfection

It was timed to perfection as it came only two minutes before the end of the match with no time to change the result.

Mohammad Omar, the Al Jazira and UAE striker, scored his 100th goal in the league when he levelled the scores for Al Jazira 36 minutes into the first half. Faisal had scored the first goal of Ahli earlier.

Omar became a member of the 100-goal club, which includes players Adnan Al Talyani (Al Shaab), Yousuf Attig (Al Ahli), Ahmad Abdullah (Al Ain), Fahad Khamis (Al Wasl) and Abdul Aziz Mohammad (Sharjah). All of them retired years ago.

Omar scored 57 goals for Al Wasl, his first club, then moved to Al Ain to score 29 goals before joining Al Jazira last season to score 14 goals for them.

Faisal spoiled Omar's celebrations by scoring his late goal, which deprived Al Jazira of winning any point from the encounter.

In the other match of the night, Bani Yas and Al Shaab played a dull match that ended in a goalless tie.

It was the second successive match for Al Shaab to fail to score a single goal. Their last match ended in a similar result at home against Al Wasl last week.

Bani Yas, who beat Al Shabab away 3-0 last week, also failed to score at home. It is one of the puzzles of the inconsistent domestic league.
