Al Nasr to clash with Oman club Sohar
Dubai: The 26th GCC clubs volleyball tournament will start today as hosts Al Nasr clash with Sohar of Oman in the opening match at 7:30pm at the Al Nasr club Rashid Bin Hamdan indoor sports hall. The opening ceremony will begin at 6pm.
The tournament, which will end on March 21, witnesses the participation of six GCC clubs-defending champions Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, Sohar of Oman, Al Qadsia of Kuwait, Al Muharraq of Bahrain, Al Arabi of Qatar and hosts Al Nasr.
The only UAE club which has won the title is Al Jazira in the first edition in 1982. Al Muharraq of Bahrain has won the title nine times. Al Qadsia Kuwait were champions six times.
Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli won three titles. Al Nejma of Bahrain and Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia each won twice and Bahrain's Al Nasr won it once.
Al Nasr after winning the bronze medal in the Arab clubs championships held recently in Tunisia, are eager to win the GCC title for the first time. Al Nasr have strengthened their side by signing up Croatian spiker Dimitry and Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Al Bahly.
