When in doubt, check labour law

Employers who put their interests ahead of the employees contradict the provisions

Let a recent case between the Ministry of Labour and a Dubai insurance company serve as a warning to unscrupulous employers that twisting of the law cannot be tolerated. And workers should also note that their interests will be protected from employers who put their own interests ahead of the employees and contradict the provisions of national law.

In essence, the case stems from a dispute whereby employees had to sign labour contracts provided by their employer, which violated both the content and spirit of the UAE labour law.

New arrivals to the UAE are both anxious to create a good impression and reluctant to question the provisions of their labour contracts, assuming — wrongly as it often turns out to be — that the contract is in line with the law. It's only when difficulties arise that the workers realise their contracts are spurious.

If you're in doubt, check with the Ministry of Labour — it's there to serve you.
