As its name suggests, Ardha Pawanmuktasana, which translates to "wind releasing pose", focuses on the abdominal region, in particular on the digestive system. People often gain weight and excess fat around the abdomen without truly understanding why.

Of course, a poor diet is a big contributing factor, but so is poor digestion and bad circulation around the organs, which can lead to a feeling of sluggishness and lethargy.

This can be caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, incorrect diet or lack of exercise, and causes water retention and bloating, along with contributing to more serious health issues. When practised regularly, Ardha pawanmuktasana stimulates the digestive tract, improving energy levels tremendously. It also tones the muscles of the abdomen and back.

Procedure

  • Lie on your back with your arms by your sides.
  • As you exhale, bend your right leg and bring the right thigh to the chest. Interlock the fingers just below the right knee. Keep the left leg straight on the ground.
  • While exhaling, press your right knee towards your chest, while simultaneously raising your shoulders off the floor. Bring the right knee to the chin.
  • As you inhale slowly, come back to the starting position. Repeat 5-10 times with right leg and then 5-10 times with the left leg.

Tip: Always start with the right leg, so as to stimulate the intestines in the correct sequence.

Benefits

  • It stimulates the solar plexus.
  • It contributes to healthy bowel movement.
  • It gives relief from constipation.
  • It relieves lower-back pain.
  • It tones the abdominal organs.

Caution

Avoid raising your head and shoulders off the floor if you have a neck or a back injury.
