Tropical storm Washi (called Sendong in the Philippines) was packing winds at 60-100km/h and 10-25mm of rainfall per hour when it slammed parts of Mindanao on Friday evening.

More than 500 people have been reported killed, with more than 400 others missing.

Rescuers are busy trying to find missing people or locate dead bodies. Officials fear the death toll may rise.

An unidentified father cries as he carries the body of his child, who was among hundreds killed by tropical storm Wasi, locally known as Sendong, in Cagayan de Oro in the southern Philippines.
