Sarah Al Salem from Palestine finds Ramadan a time to contemplate one’s actions. The 18-year-old student tells us about her Ramadan experience in the UAE:
“I was born in Jordan, but I am originally from Palestine. I came from Canada to the UAE seven years ago and I appreciate the Ramadan spirit here for many reasons. The most important is that a lot of my family members are living here. When I was in Canada, I did not feel the spirit of Ramadan but when I came to the UAE, I started to appreciate the month more. For instance, I can hear the Adhan, the call for prayers, wherever I am. Also, there is more time to spend with my family and enjoy iftar with them which is a special moment.
“At this time of the year, I find the spirit of the month [to be] calm and relaxing. I get a chance to contemplate my actions. Also, during this month, everyone wants to help, to give, to provide opportunities for the less fortunate, [it is a month that brings out the] best qualities in people.
“Ramadan teaches me how to be more patient and friendly, and how to forgive those with whom we fought.
“What I appreciate the most about this month is that people try to be more understanding and caring towards each other.
“In addition to all this, Ramadan is the time for all the family members to gather after a day of fasting. These moments for me are the best.
“Finally, seeing people coming together to pray and worship, and move towards the same goal all over the world is overwhelming. Basically, this month is a time for peace, consideration and reflection.
