Pay The Ghost
As Halloween approaches, it is no surprise that there will be a fistful of thriller/horror movies in the lead up. In Pay the Ghost, Academy award-winner Nicolas Cage heads the cast as Mike Lawford, a professor who loses his son during a Halloween parade. A year after the disappearance Mike is haunted by eerie messages and images, and he must work with his estranged wife Kristen, played by Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead, Prison Break), in an attempt to find their missing son. Of course there are plot twists and turns along the way and the disappearances go far beyond just one little boy. This film is a nail-biting ride that horror/thriller enthusiasts are sure to enjoy.
Hotel Transylvania 2
In this animated sequel to the 2012 film, Dracula, voiced by Adam Sandler (50 First Dates, Happy Gilmore), must bring out the monster in his half-human, half-vampire grandson to prevent his daughter Mavis, voiced by Selena Gomez, from leaving the hotel and going to live among the humans. Hilarity ensues as Dracula’s creepy friends, the likes of Frankenstein, a werewolf, a mummy and a giant green blob, do their best to turn a cute, ginger-haired child into a terrifying monster. There are some great voice talents in this film, with the likes of Steve Buscemi, David Spade and Keegan-Michael Key. It’s a great little film that the whole family will enjoy.
The Intern
It’s role reversal for Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway in this film, as instead of playing the intern as she did in The Devil Wears Prada, she’s now the boss, Jules Ostin, the founder of an online fashion site. Her intern is 70-year-old retired widower Ben Whittaker, played by Robert De Niro. Ben’s wisdom, charm and sense of humour make him a hit with his younger co-workers and his boss. It’s a lovely feel-good movie, well written with a fantastic cast and characters, and is sure to be a hit.
The Visit
Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (Signs, The Sixth Sense) this film is definitely one to send shivers down your spine. Two children — Rebecca, played by Olivia DeJonge, and her brother Tyler, played by Ed Oxenbould — are to visit their grandparents, whom they’ve never met, for a week. The children intend to film a documentary about their visit — cue lots of Blair Witch-style sequences. The children are warned by the grandparents not to leave their bedroom after 9.30pm. Lots of strange things happen and their grandparents exhibit very strange behaviour, and things are definitely not as they appear. The Visit is a film that’s going to have you peaking through your fingers through the entire film.
