Launched in 2006, the championship has grown from strength to strength over the years and has now become a landmark event for lifeguards throughout the United Arab Emirates.

Ankati said the championship increases awareness about water safety while also allowing lifeguards the opportunity to socialise among their peers in a fun-filled atmosphere.

The event is open to all qualified male and female lifeguards employed at hotels, swimming pools, water parks and beaches.

A record 28 teams are participating in this year.

Participants will compete in six challenging events, which include a 1km Beach Run, 400-metre Surf Swim, 120-metre Tube rescue, Beach Flags and 90-metre Beach Sprint Relay.

The championship was won by Wild Wadi last year.
