Anyone looking for authentic Middle Eastern cuisine and a rustic ambience should walk through the grand carved wooden door of Sarai, a Middle Eastern restaurant which opened at the Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) last month.
Stepping into Sarai is like a journey into old Arabia. The interiors feature sophisticated ceramic tiles, high ceilings decorated with chandeliers, traditional lanterns, wooden beams and Arabic inscriptions and designs, including poems relating to generosity and hospitality.
The carvings on the doors and walls replicate those of the old cities in Turkey and Lebanon. Trip to the past
“The ambience takes you on a trip to medieval Arabia which is linked to many adventurous stories,'' said Nader Hallal, Marketing Manager of Alshaya Casual Dining.
Sarai encompasses the cuisines of Turkey, Armenia, Lebanon and Syria. The menu offers a selection of hot and cold starters and mezze, such as eatch (cracked wheat salad), yalangi (stuffed vine leaves with rice and oriental spices) and mohammara (walnut, kaak and pomegranate molasses pesto).
In addition to speciality dishes like michwi moutabal, skewers of marinated and grilled lamb, diners have the option of sharing an assortment of kebbeh and grills like kebab Sarai, shrimp kebab and the original bel karaz (kebab balls with cherry sauce, cinnamon and roasted pine nuts).
Among the exotic items on the menu is kibbe nayyeh – a dish made of freshly minced raw lamb with spices and bulgur grain. Desserts such as halawet el jeben, cheese rolls filled with cream and kashta maa mraba alward, clotted cream served with rose jam, round off the culinary experience at Sarai.
