Elegance, ability and a touch of rebellion. That pretty much sums up the character of Master Qui-Gon Jinn, a noble and important Jedi who lived during the Old Republic.
Qui-Gon Jinn's instructor had been a great Jedi Master, Count Dooku, who would later be attracted to the dark side of the force. Qui-Gon was a serious Jedi, but he also had his own way of doing things and a certain stubbornness that occasionally was in opposition to the Jedi Council's decisions. Despite these differences of opinion, the Council was convinced that Qui-Gon would be a great Master.
Qui-Gon took on the young, but talented, Obi-Wan Kenobi as an apprentice. Qui-Gon knew that Obi-Wan was a rough diamond to be polished, and sensed that in the future Obi-Wan would shine even brighter than himself.
Qui-Gon, who was a principal character in Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, was alarmed to discover that the Trade Federation had built an army and that the Republic, which he defended, had granted it. The discovery took him to Naboo, where, with Obi-Wan and Queen Padmé Amidala, he fought against the droids of the Trade Federation.
Qui-Gon first encounters his nemesis, the Sith Darth Maul, while on Tatooine and manages to hold him (and his double-ended lightsabre) off until he can escape the planet with Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker.
Qui-Gon was the first to sense the force in Anakin and advises the Council that the child is the one prophesised to destroy the Sith. However, he is not able to take Anakin on as a padawan or follow his progress, as Qui-Gon's next fight with Darth Maul, after the Battle of Naboo, would be fatal.
The Jedi was supposed to appear in Episodes II and III, but his scenes were deleted. One of these scenes showed Qui-Gon, speaking from beyond the grave, teaching Yoda the way to reach immortality. This is a Jedi technique that he would later teach Obi-Wan Kenobi, who famously returns after his death as a Force ghost in Episodes V and VI.
