Kate Moss’s first shoot for Vogue — as editor

Kate Moss’ latest incarnation — fashion editor for British Vogue — came of age today, when images from her first shoot behind the camera were released in the run-up to the March issue of the magazine hitting the shelves.

Moss has been working with longtime collaborators Mert + Marcus as photographers, and with insider favourite Daria Werbowy as model: all the components are in place for a Fashion Moment. The result of this alpha alliance emerges with Moss’s influence at the fore: her signature rockn’roll aesthetic is riding high.

Werbowy is almost unrecognisable too. The Vogue regular is usually seen as a natural beauty — she looks make-up-free, dressed in an LBD, fishnet tights and lashings of eyeliner with a bright orange wig. With Werbowy sitting at the wheel of what looks like a Cadillac, in the woods at dusk, the mood of the shoot is a bit Americana, a misfit on the run. And her pose is all limbs — one you could imagine Moss — who has graced the cover of Vogue 33 times — herself affecting.

It recalls shoots from the Face magazine in around 1994 — the same year as Natural Born Killers, with its fugitive-chic icon, Juliette Lewis, came out. Moss would have starred in them then. Now she’s handing over the baton. This is a starter before the Moss main course, but it’s safe to say all the ingredients are in place.
