Shoojit Sircar knew who he wanted for ‘Piku’

Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, who has been praised for his latest film Piku, says he always knew he wanted Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan for the film, but the idea of casting Deepika Padukone came later.

“We had already decided on Irrfan and Amitabh while writing the script. Their characters were written keeping them in mind. Deepika happened post the script was written,” said Sircar talking to film enthusiasts at an event in Mumbai.

Sircar added that “Deepika got the character bang on. I had asked her to watch Konkona Sen Sharma’s films.”

The Vicky Donor director shared the inside world of Piku at the interactive session, which was moderated by The Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra.

Piku is about a father-daughter relationship that viewers see as they travel from Delhi to Kolkata in a car through the scenic city of Varanasi.
