Sanam Teri Kasam, a 2016 flop, was re-released on February 7
Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane's Sanam Teri Kasam made a grand return to theaters on Friday, nine years after its original release in 2016. The romantic drama, which has gained cult status over the years, hit the big screens again on February 7, coinciding with Rose Day, the start of Valentine's Week.
The re-release has been met with an overwhelming response, with the film selling over 67,000 tickets in advance bookings for its opening day. The warm reception has surprised many, reflecting the film's enduring popularity among cinephiles, particularly the younger audience.
Box office expectations
Jointly directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, Sanam Teri Kasam opened to a surprising over Rs 40 million on its first day and continued its strong theatrical run on Day 2. The movie remains the top choice for moviegoers over the opening weekend and is expected to sustain its momentum throughout the first week. The film has now completed two days of its re-release at the box office.
With strong advance bookings continuing for the weekend, there's even a possibility that it could surpass this week’s new release, Badass Ravi Kumar, to become the top choice for moviegoers.
The film joins a growing list of re-releases, including Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, and Laila Majnu, which have also found renewed success in cinemas.
Despite its initial box office underperformance in 2016—earning Rs 80 million net in India and Rs 150 million crore gross globally—Sanam Teri Kasam has since developed a devoted fan base. Its emotional love story continues to resonate, making the re-release an opportunity to rewrite its box office fate.
With Valentine's Week in full swing and positive word-of-mouth spreading fast, Sanam Teri Kasam might just get the recognition it missed the first time around.
